Timeline of roles, open source work, education and skills: senior data scientist in geospatial data and computer vision.

Timeline

Core contributor

MermaidSeg

2026

An open-source coral-reef segmentation platform for the MERMAID conservation monitoring system. I worked on DINOv3 fine-tuning, training pipelines and the public demo.

Contributor

MERMAID classifier

2024

Open-source training and evaluation tooling for MERMAID’s coral image classifiers, built on PySpacer, with MLflow-logged evaluation, HTML reports and a Dockerized command-line interface. More on the project.

Editor

pyOpenSci

October 2023 to present

Open peer review of scientific Python packages. I served a rotation as Editor-in-Chief from July to September 2025.

Deep Learning Specialization

Coursera

2023 to October 2025

Neural networks and deep learning, improving deep networks (hyperparameter tuning, regularization and optimization), structuring machine learning projects, convolutional neural networks, and sequence models including RNNs, LSTMs and transformers. View the certificate.

Data Science Mentor

YWCA Hamilton

March 2022 to October 2022

Senior Data Scientist, Team and Project Lead

Sparkgeo

July 2021 to August 2026

I joined as a data scientist, became the Data Science Team Lead, and finished as a senior data scientist and team and project lead. I built detection and segmentation models from satellite and aerial imagery, from coral reefs to rooftops, and a pipeline that scores whether tens of millions of businesses are still operating, for the Overture Maps Foundation. I chaired the AI Working Group. I managed the data science team (2 to 5 direct reports).

Health Data Analyst

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health

December 2020 to July 2021

Data Scientist and Spatial Lead

Green Analytics

April 2018 to May 2020

Co-founder

PolyGone

June 2017 to January 2018

We built a startup to capture the microplastics that synthetic clothing sheds in the wash. We raised over $30,000 and were one of five teams in the AquaHacking 2017 finals. PolyGone was accepted into Velocity Science and based in its lab. Vice covered the project.

Course Instructor

University of Victoria

2017 to September 2022

Taught various workshops on programming, GIS, visualization and statistics for PopDataBC at University of Victoria for professionals and graduate students.

Consultant

Self-employed

September 2016 to 2018

Mitacs Accelerate Intern

Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association

May 2016 to September 2016

Graduate Research Assistant

Wilfrid Laurier University

April 2015 to January 2019

TA’d statistics, remote sensing and GIS courses. Research projects and publications.

MSc, Geography

Joint University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University program

2014 to 2018

Geography and Geomatics, with a concentration in Environmental Science. Thesis: Spatial Modelling and Wildlife Health Surveillance: A case study of White Nose Syndrome in Ontario, supervised by Dr. Colin Robertson.

Geographic Information Systems Technician

Town of Amherstburg

April 2012 to August 2014
